The Nature of Courage

(21 May 2011)#

I wrote this song after reading of the U.S. ‘kill teams’ that murder Afghans and take photos and body parts as trophies, and U.S. Chief of Command General Mattis’ statement in 2005 that he finds killing people ‘fun’.

Through sources including David Hicks’ book Guantanamo: My Journey, I have become aware that as women become more involved in direct military operations, they often behave abusively, finding a new arena in which it is socially encouraged (as it always has been for men) to act out emotional damage from childhood.  Those soldiers who are merely obedient, rather than psychotically violent, suffer victimisation, trauma, injury and death as the servants of those who are far more seriously emotionally damaged. And obedient soldiers become involved in the indiscriminate killing, torture and humiliation of civilians and captives as they act out their leaders’ dysfunctional desires for ‘security’ and misplaced revenge. If violence against oneself and others is not courageous, what is the true nature of courage?

What is the life of a little boy worth?
What is the life worth of the father who beats him?
What is the life of a little girl worth?
What is the life worth of the mother who screams at her?
What are the lives of all young people worth?
What are the lives worth of those who force them to obey?

If it's about security, they're failing.

Who are these soldiers before me?
They look like little boys and girls to me.

I like the two lines about revenge and security….it sums it all up

This song really touched me! I’m a Dutch citizen who lived for almost a year in Palestine, a place to which this song can also be applied very well… thanks for your beautiful music!

“The answer is blowing in the wind,” but your Socratic/declarative refrain is clear and true. You, too, keep courage, Anita, when “those times” come.
